5:30 pm – The Resettlers or the Death of the Countryside
Henrik Kuhlmann presents the performative land art project Bauerntheater by David Levine and Sarah Phillips (2007) and speaks with B. K. Tragelehn and Nicola Nord (of andcompany&Co.) about their planned project The Resettlers.
Reading by Mira Partecke with B. K. Tragelehn
Moderated by Anja Quickert
When B. K. Tragelehn premiered Heiner Müller’s play The Resettler, or Life in the Countryside in autumn 1961, scandal was inevitable. After 13 August, a single sentence about state borders was enough to provoke the authorities. Yet the play was not about the construction of the Wall, but about land reform and the collectivization of agriculture. At the same time, 1961 is considered the beginning of the “Green Revolution.” The United States pushed the intensification of agriculture to secure food supplies for people in the Global South—a “Green Revolution” against a looming “Red Revolution.” The result was a population explosion—and a new wave of species extinction.
6:30 pm – Green Revolution or Green Catastrophe? On the Future of Agriculture and the Food System
Panel discussion with Sophie von Redecker and Martin Reich
Today, the “Green Revolution” is seen as a major driver of the “pincer crisis” of global heating and species extinction. Around the world, alternatives to intensive agriculture are being sought—whether through organic farming or through the expansion of alternative forms of food production, such as fermentation. Agricultural scientist Sophie von Redecker discusses with Martin Reich (author of Revolution from the Microcosm) the question: “What has agriculture ever done for us?”
